welcome to the forums. as you'll learn we are very relaxed about the roles of the players. for example I alternate back and forth, for the past month or 2 maybe I've played the sniper role with my L96 rifle. Even a few weeks ago I obtained a ghillie suit and have used it out there while in the sniper role. then i wanted a quick change so I took off the ghillie suit, put on a tac vest, grabbed my AK 47 and jumped into the rifleman role.
its basically your personal preference of what you're wanting to play that day.

Welcome too the forum I highly suggest you start out as a rifleman cause the role of a sniper isn't something you should jump right into. Pred and Cp are two of the best snipers in airsoft you will find just watch them play.
Your more then welcome to come out too the game we're having this coming Sunday.

Welcome to the forums.
I will agree with Koyote on the Riflemen part first. This is why. The sniper rifles in airsoft, stock are about the same as a AEG. So when your shooting one BB at a time, someone else can send a whole 30rds at you. However, if you upgrade a sniper rifle then thats great. CPatte's rifle can hit a plate a 240ft. Also FPS isn't everything! This seems to be common thought by alot of players. The reason you get guns that shoot 400+fps is because they can use a heavier bb. Heavier BB= less speed and more momentum. Both are good because less speed means you have alot less air resistance on your BB making it more accurate. Along with not using a .20 you will get alot more accuracy and sometimes more range. Because you can lose speed, you can't lose mass. Along with having a heavy BB, you want a high quality BB. You can get some KSC .30grams for about $16 for 2200, or even better BBs like Biovals. Along with accuracy and range you want is a good hop up. Aftermarkets like Firefly are very good. Then comes the tight bore barrel. The bore, or inner diameter doesn't really matter much. It does help FPS though. However the thing you want is quality. So a upgraded sniper rifle can cost in the upwards of $300 or more. Also remember that if you want a higher FPS like 500 or 550. You will need a more powerful spring. Which means more upgrading. Like a Zero Trigger or new sears. Which can get expensive.
Not trying to discourage you from sniping, but im just telling you the truth. You can have fun with a bolt action sniper rifle, but you will be outgunned at times. One idea would be for you to get a gun which resembles a DMR. Like a M14, G3, M16A4,SR-25,etc. Because then you can use Semi-Automatic like a DM or when your in a jam, you can use full auto. The ending decision is yours though. Just be what you want to be.
Hope this helps. (EDIT: Holy crap. Didn't think I typed that much.)

i agree with kid except on one key point. not ALL stock sniper rifles are on the same level as AEG's. with .30s mine gets roughly the same range as and AEG but is much more accurate. with a .20 however my sniper rifle gets incredible range but loses lots of accuracy.
and mine is completely stock except for a modification to the inner barrel and it shoots like a dream
