I'm researching radios, and I was curious what the standard is that everyone uses. FRS, GMRS or the radios that can do both? I was thinking of picking a radio and throat mic up for use at the season opener, but I didn't want to spend more than necessary. I'm currently considering this Midland set: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001WMFYH4/and this mic: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002CX0QLQ/Any input or opinions would be much appreciated.

I have those radios. They are great so far. I like the headset that comes with them. My wife doesn't. We were able to talk to each other easily over 2.5 miles from one side of our town to the other.

I wear a full face Dye i4, so unfortunately the supplied headsets won't work well... Thanks for the input!

Oh god not throat mics. Sounds like alien cyborgs are attacking. -lol- Throat mics can be... less then awesome at times.
I run a cobra radio FRS, to a ICOM Push to talk, to a Bowman Style Replica made by matrix on Evike and I absolutely love it.
No issue.... just need to stop being cheap and buy an actual radio pouch.... And find out how to disable a certain teammates call button -lol-
Thirsty headsets are awesome and cool but many on the field do not run them. Or they do and they wear the radios themselves without headset.
Your call but if you have something else to finish with your load out, I would recommend saving radio headset for a latter time down the list. Once again not sure were you are on your loadout, or equipment. This more over when I see you wear a face mask.

Slacker - I think I'm pretty set on my loadout, the radio was more of a "nice to have" item. I've got ESS goggles and a mesh mask, but I run into fogging and comfort issues with my prescription glasses. I picked up the i4 and it pretty much eliminated those issues.
I appreciate your input; I think I'll hold off until after the opener and scope out what everyone else is using first.

I ran a throat mic several years ago and I loved it when it worked right... by working right more or less the mic would move when I moved or tried to move and creep in the woods... I will say it.. I like to creep right up on someone....... however back to my statement. I loved it but had to give it up due to it moving.
Also I do not like the earpiece. It throws off sounds at least in my opinion.
I wear an ear piece at work for obvious reasons and when I am can I will take it out because it messes with my range or location of sounds and where they are coming from.
Good luck with your purchase.

I have absolutely no issue showing you my setup on the day either before or after the event. I need them however for during the event. Show up early I might not be playing but I will have my gear and some goodies for trade. Bowman headset is one ear piece set away from the ear and no headset on the other side. Nothing stops me from hearing anyone. Made for and used by the Navy Seals to this day for that reason.

I will be bringing a headset/mic for the auction. I bought it and it doesn't seem to work with my radio. Not sure if it is defective, or if it is a compatibility issue. I have another headset so you can try these. I think young like them (if they work). They are kenwood 2 pin connector. They have a boom mic, but an in ear listening device. Best if both worlds. I have a dye i4 mask, so I know what they look like and this would work out great.
