As BIA continues to grow and expand we see more snipers on our field. And if YOU are a new player, you may be thinking...is sniping FOR ME? I highly reccommend purchasing an AEG first for the fact that most AEGs can match or in some cases outperform stock sniper rifles. The best advice i can give is get an AEG, mount a cheap scope to it, fill your mag with ONLY around 20 rounds and fire in SEMI-AUTO only. This will force the player into a different mindset than a normal rifleman. do this and see if you like it. If it turns out to be something you enjoy, sniping could be for you. if NOT, then you didn't waste money on a sniper rifle that you don't like, instead you have an automatic weapon.
I found a few very good articles pertaining to sniping recently. There are alot of different conceptions about what it means to be a sniper. The full article can be found here www.airsoftforum.com/board/Sniper-t70261.html
This article does hit on alot of my beliefs of sniping. I reccomend anyone interested in sniping to give it a read.
It's in my thoughts that the current generation of Movies, and games mislead and represent snipers in the wrong way. Games such as Call of Duty, Halo, Battlefield, ect ect. Movies aren't guilt free either. Alot of people also seem to think that a sniper is an all powerful warrior who enters the enemy lines undetected, pinpoints his high priority target, and then takes him out from a very safe distance and then retreats out of the zone. This is also untrue. While a sniper does possess a rifle capable of long range engagement, one should never underestimate their enemy and assume that they are safe behind enemy lines no matter what the distance.
So what IS the exact role of a sniper? Well it's my opinion that there are several roles that a sniper can take. A sniper could do recon. By getting to a location and remaining there, motionless, observing anything he sees be it enemy movement or simple environmental observations. The sniper could then record his observations in a personal log or radio back the intel to any team mates. There is the role of designated marksman, which relies less on stealth and more upon the skill and weapon of the shooter. Its common to see DM's use weapons such as the SR-25 in this situation for the option in firing in automatic should the enemy get too close and in larger numbers. There are also the snipers whose job it is to eliminate a specific target. Be it a person or an object that needs destroyed. These snipers can sit (or lay) in one location for their target, for hours or even days. They will wait for the one shot, one kill. There are other roles a sniper can have on the field as well, these are just some of the basic ones.
What is required to be a great sniper? There isn't one defining factor, instead there are several factors that come into play. A sniper MUST be patient. A sniper MUST excel in the use of his rifle. They must be able to judge and estimate distances as well as wind speed and direction. A sniper MUST be able to demonstrate the ability to blend with their surroundings to avoid detection. A sniper must be able to remain calm under fire or in certain "death" situations.
There are more factors than this that come into play when sniping, but again click the link up top for the full article.
