It is a common known fact that ghillie suits are the ultimate camoflage for a sniper or marksman. But there are some misconceptions about their use, functionality, and application.
1) A Ghillie Suit is only as good as its wearer. If the sniper is sprinting around in a ghillie suit from cover to cover, he shall be compromised and the suit is deemed ineffective.
2) A ghillie Suit WILL NOT make you invisible to your opponents. While it IS leaps and bounds better than standard camoflage all it will take is a keen eye and a simple mistake from the wearer to be detceted.
3) A ghillie suit is NOT intended to make the wearer look like a plant or bush. As funny as that sounds, I have heard that claim from many MANY people. The purpose of the ghillie suit to to break up the Silhouette of the wearer. Lets face it, the shape of the Human body is one most recognizeable outlines that your brain can detect. By wearing a ghillie suit, you eliminate the human silhouette and with the color of the material you blend into the environment.
4) Know your surroundings when using a ghillie suit. If you are in a wooded area with lots of foliage, try to find areas where the green of your suit will blend. If you wear a tan based suit, keep to the lighter areas. In all cases avoid locations where you will be walking against the "Backdrop" of the sky. By this i mean don't walk upright at a location such as the crest of a hill, where and enemy at the bottom could look up and see you clear as day illuminated against the sky behind you. Keep to shaded areas. Your suit will help you blend into the environment better in areas of lower light rather than in direct sunlight.
5) There is more than one style of suit one can wear. The first is a military style suit which leaves the entire front of the suit bare from the hood down to the boots. This allows the sniper to carry more mags, sidearms, food, water, anything he needs. the MAIN focus of the bare front suit is to allow for easier crawls. with no ghillie material on the front of the suit the sniper can easily crawl through various terrain without the suit hindering movement.
The other style of suit is one that covers the entire body head to toe (with the exception of the feet and hands) This suit is ideal if the wearer intends to spend more time on their feet stalking their prey rather than remaining prone. This style of suit has a much greater tendency to get caught and snagged up on branches and twigs making movement slightly more difficult for its user.
6)Ghillie wrap/rifle wrap is just as important as the suit for the wearer. While a custom camo paintjob can be effective, it will not eliminate the silhouette of a rifle out on the field. If one is to truly blend into their environment they must find a way to break up the silhouette of their weapon as well. A ghillie wrap is a very simple way to do this. Burlap is also and effective solution.
