The divergence of opinions on the platform is very curious and interesting to me. Not being a long time airsofter, I guess I don't understand the open contempt of the polar star. I'm not sure if I understand the airsoft and paintball comments. Paintball also uses HPA tanks, but of course they were long used in other applications but were just adopted for their use. The remote or coiled hoses are not really used in paintball any more. They were popular in the 90's for the most part but have all but died out.
I will also agree that the pursuit of "MilSim" is what airsoft is all about. I will respects others comments about the hose not being the most "MilSim". The deal breaker for AEG's for me was the trigger response. No matter the upgrades, I hated the delay between trigger pull and the bb firing. I couldn't stand it. I did my research on GBBR's and as much as I like the realism, there is no way I would be able to stand the amount of time it normally takes to maintain them. I wanted an airsoft rifle with: 1.) instant trigger response 2.) little to no maintenance 3.) consistent (i have a chrono and my gun fluctuates 1-4FPS)(my stock aeg flucutates about 20FPS) 4.) customizable (i wanted to make sure it was able to be set to semi only ((but could also go back to full), shoot closed bolt, shoot 350fps or 500fps, increase air volume to offset using very heavy bb's) 5.) ROF - I actually wanted the polar star to make sure and set my rate of fire between 12-15 RPS. This is the actual rate of fire of most military rifles. My stock AEG fires 19 RPS so it is firing faster than any real steel gun would normally fire. The only thing I am really missing in terms of how my gun functions in comparison to a real steal rifle is the recoil. My sig actually came with electric blowback, but it was disabled when i got the gun.
These are the criteria I was looking for in a gun. An AEG and a GBBR have some of these features, but neither has all of them. If the trade off for having the airsoft rifle that performs identically the way I want it to perform is having a tank and hose, well, you can see the route I went. The tank fits in my hydration pouch. Instead of buying a 3 liter bladder, I have a 1 liter bladder. The weight of 1 liter of water is 2.2 pounds. So, the weight of my tank, that is 2 pounds and 10 ounces plus my 1 liter bladder, weighs less than 3 liters of water. Basically, I don't notice it is there. I run a pair of MSA dual com Sordin's. My PTT cables and headphone cables are twice as thick as the air hose. I already have this stuff woven throughout my rig and it really doesn't look much different. The hose is not cmbersome at all because I have the newer tight coiled hose that stays sucked right up to your body instead of the old rigid straight ones. I also had the guy that built my gun add a custom 45 degree angled nipple at the base of my handle grip so I didn't have the 'rat tail' sticking out the bottom that makes the hose more noticeable when handling. As a matter of fact, my one point sling limits my gun motion whereas my coiled hose does not.
I didn't expect my thread to turn into a Polar Star debate. I am not taking any of these comments or opinions personally, but I thought I would add my 2 cents to the mix.

I'll take my 556 Love it. I was really close to buying a 556 just like that, I found one that had the full length, real steel RIS. I love the RIS, but I will say it weighs a ton compared to the plastic one. If you still have this 556 and want/need any upgrades, let me know. The gearbox I pulled out of my 556 to put the polar star had these upgrades: Prometheus hard bucking: $20 Big Out hop-up nub: $10 Systema Magnum Motor: $100 King Arms V3 reinforced performance 7mm gearbox: $50 Prometheus Max Torque gear set: $190 Prometheus 7mm Bushing: $30 Prometheus Cylinder Head: $30 Prometheus polycarbonate piston: $35 Prometheus aluminum piston head: $30 Prometheus anti-reversal latch: $15 Prometheus spring guide: $25 Guarder SP150 spring: $20 Professional gear box assembly, Angle of Engagement (AoE) correction, mechanical blowback disengaged for reliability & durability, deans plugs installed: $85

hmmmn.... how much ya want for all of it? $200. There may be one or two things missing from it. I think the guy that built my gun had to use the selector switch plate. You shouldn't have a problem because you can just use the one on yours. The only other thing you need to know is the positive battery wire came undone and needs to be soldered back on. It is a long wire that was to the front of the gun and it has Dean's. The gearbox needs cracked in order to solder it and since I was going Polar Star, I never fixed it. You probably already know this, but I figured I would mentioned it....with this setup you will have to run a decent size LIPO. Just wanted to put that out there. I used a 11.1 and 3000mah.

Not to derail again but I had a guy from kzoo message me bout tradeing him my LM4 GBBR for his p*. Kinda weird. I don't understand why this would be weird? It all boils down to personal preference. Maybe he has trouble getting the tank filled? I know some people don't have easy access to high pressure air. The paintball plex is 8 minutes from my house and it doesn't cost me anything to fill so it really isn't an issue for me.

It just seems weird that a person would spend $500+ on a gun then just turn around and want to trade for a gbbr. I always try to do as much research as I can before I buy a gun. That way I don't get stuck with something I don't like.

Ah, gotcha. I see your point of view. Maybe the person didn't like the fact that there was no recoil. Polar Star guns have zero recoil or feedback. Even AEG seem to "kick" a little. Maybe the no recoil thing bothered them once they were able to use the gun.

GBB's are WAY cool if you can deal with their leaking mags.....ugh! I have seen more and repaired more leaky mags then I can count. Right there is the ONLY reason I have shied aay from them. Other than that, a well tuned GBB rifle imho is over the top.
I am seriously looking into the LM4 by KWA for sure. But, I have had to fix a number of thier mags and they are also way more exspensive then the regular mid-cap mags.
Yes.....all the "Kewl Guys" run the GBB's.......and more power to you!!
That weapon format will run with any PolarStar or AEg when tuned.

What have you had to fix? I personally have only had a few leakers. But nothing a valve wrench and some oil can't fix. Thankfully that is all so far. But the cost thing is not really a factor when stacked against other setups. Like this thread in particular. At least a grand spent on this setup. And I have no where near that in my lm4 with 7 mags. hell I could have 10 mags and still not be close to a grand.

I just totally rebuilt three AWSS We tech magazines to the new open bolt system. cost me 13 dollars a mag. From leaky to nothing in 15 minutes for all three of them. I dont much see why people think gas is so expensive. I have a WE tech M4 with a new hopup, and ten magazines, I have put 5000 plus rounds through the weapon, and I got all of it for 548 dollars in so far. I personally prefer fixing leaky mags to fixing blown out motors. BUT! I was a SAW gunner before this. Lots of ammo has been replaced with little ammo and green gas. HOWEVER this is all against this posts intent. Polar Stars are here, as long as it is used in good intent. It will be just like any other AEG or GBBR on the field.
For the record I got a GBBR because I understand how to fix the darn things. Polar star goes wrong can you fix it? If your AEG brakes do you know how to fix anything in it? Thats why I love my gbbr, I know the springs and what they do to what. I understand the gun. Not for the performance
We are all itching for some trigger time. Badly. This weather is a killer.

The Polar Stars selling point is that they only have two moving parts, which decreases the chance of a break down. Only draw back I see with them is having a tank on your back. I tend to crawl around and stalk when I'm out at are field I can see that remote line snagging and catching on everything, then again my sling does that as well. Plus having to get the tank filled up, myself I don't really have any where I can fill one up at but that's me.
As for the price issue, I think the reasoning behind that is with GBBR they are suppose to run on green gas not straight propane. With green gas around 12 -14 a can that could be where people think it's pricey. Yes I know the straight propane is cheaper but with that you have to add the oil yourself, plus the smell (which gives me a horror able headache).
Well, with the playability from what I've encountered the polar stars have the ability to out gun just about anyone out their with an AEG or GBBR. Their about the only gun I've truly felt was a true match against my PTW's due to the trigger response.
But to each their own I'll play against anyone I really don't care what they use, gun doesn't make the player any way.

Koyote...totally agree! I say bring it! I love my AEG's and will play better. The gun is an extension to the player...the gun does not make the player!!
